INVITATION TO THE YEAR 2000 GREENLAND OPEN KAYAKING CHAMPIONSHIP

Dear Paddler,

We are mailing the program for the first Greenland Open National kayaking Championship as an invitation for foreign paddlers to participate in the games. Since 1987, we have held our National Kayaking Championships, in a different town each year, arranged by the local Club on behalf of the Greenland National kayak Association. Our Club will be the host here in Nuuk, the capital of Greenland.

There are around 20 to 25 local Kayak Clubs here in Greenland, where the main goal for the Clubs is to preserve the traditional Greenlandic kayak. All work in our Clubs is done in our spare time, and therefore no one is paid for the work. As you can see in the program, we have nine disciplines we are competing in. We are not competing for big prizes, only for medals and the honor, and we want to state that there are no professional paddlers in Greenland, and therefore all of our participants are recreational paddlers, and all have to be a member of a local Club.

The events are open for types other than the traditional Greenland kayak, as long as each paddler paddles with a Greenland style paddle. Participants are divided in groups according to their ages as follows: children: 4-6  years, 7-9, 10-12, 13-14. Youths: 15-17 years, 18-19. Adults: 20-34 years, 35-49, 50-59, 60-up.

If you want more information about the event, traveling to Greenland, freight of your equipment, we recommend you to check out the internet site: http://www.qajaqusa.org/ a site created by US paddlers and our National Kayak Association.
We hope to see you next year.

On behalf of Nuuk Kayak Club Board
with best regards

Lars Peter Danielsen
